The Imagination Network has developed a range of workshops from our collaborative creative engagement projects with persons living with the experience of dementia.  Our techniques and exercises for creative engagement have evolved through our journey, and we are still learning.  We are in the process of making some of these resources open source and available through our website – check back again soon for updates.  Please keep in mind that these workshop plans are guides, not a precise set of instructions with specific outcomes. Every body comes to creative engagement with their own uniqueness, individuality and voice.

Our workshop facilitators come to each creative engagement grounded in our guiding principles where the voice of persons with the lived experience of dementia is the focal point.  These are some of the guiding principles that we have learnt from our creative collaborations:

  • Don’t underestimate what is possible
  • Yes (acceptance) And (offer)
  • Allow yourself to be surprised
  • Consider what someone with dementia can teach you – we are all learners
  • Silence is okay – leave space and time
  • Be willing to drop your plan and pivot at any time – follow the lead of the person living with dementia
  • Be honest about your own preconceived notions/stigmas of dementia – challenge those preconceptions
  • Be present in the moment
  • Listen beyond the words – so much is happening in the nuances of communication
  • Slow is good
  • This is an ongoing practice – no one is an expert

Special thanks to our sponsors and funders whose ongoing contributions have made this project possible.
